A big family decision: moving forward in four steps
Moving house, changing career, planning a handover: deciding together without falling apart.
Big family decisions affect everyone differently. Disagreement is normal. What hurts is often the way it is discussed.
1. Frame the question. Put it in one sentence everyone understands. A poor question leads to poor debates.
2. Listen to everyone. Let each person say what they hope for and what they fear, without interrupting. Children too, at their level.
3. Compare the options. List two or three realistic scenarios and their concrete consequences: money, time, organisation, relationships.
4. Decide, then review. Agree who decides and when, and set a date to take stock afterwards.
When the conversation goes round in circles, an outside view helps bring clarity and respect back into the discussion. That is the role of family coaching.
